National Day of Truth and Reconciliation

September 30, 2024, marks National Day of Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. This federal statutory holiday has been designated to acknowledge and honour the lost children and Survivors of residential schools, their families and communities.  It is a national day of awareness and remembrance.

The CDHNS recognizes the importance of this holiday and the public commemoration of the tragic history of residential schools. Honouring Indigenous peoples begins with acknowledging not only the atrocities committed in the residential school system but also those committed through colonialism and ongoing systemic racism.  We admire the courage and strength of the Survivors and their families, as they share their experiences. By doing so, they contribute to the education of Canadians. 

The CDHNS Council and staff view September 30th as an opportunity to learn about, and reflect upon these tragic events, and recommit to understanding the truth of our shared history — all vital steps of the reconciliation process.  It is an opportunity for all Canadians to consider what we can do individually, and collectively, to advance reconciliation and create a better, more inclusive Canada.
